Valentine’s Day is a holiday that I have never been too excited about (except maybe when I was little). It just seems like another day of excessive waste – a “Hallmark Holiday” that just fills our landfills with cheap junk. But since I DID enjoy the holiday when I was little, I will play along for the sake of my two-year-old son, who will be having a Valentine’s Day party at his daycare tomorrow.
Instead of purchasing cards and candy I’ve been scouring the internet for a more earth-friendly, sustainable approach. Finally, through the direction of another green mom blogger, I found a fun website with some great craft ideas that my son and I can sit down together and make tonight.
I’m still looking through all the fun ideas, but I think the one I like the best is a flower pot-shaped card (hand cut from our pile of recycled paper of course) and a little packet of seeds which can be planted indoors now and, when spring finally comes to the Red River Valley, can be transplanted to an outdoor garden. The note that goes along with the card says “Let’s Watch Our Friendship Grow!” How cute!
Making the valentines for my son’s party instead of just buying them gives us an opportunity to do something fun together while showing our friends we care about them and – bonus – now I can also talk about showing how we care about the planet too! Hooray!
